CebIT Exhibit 2009

I was lucky I was able to register for free for the CebIT Exhibit 2009 last May 12 & 13, 2009. This event is done every year where exhibition and conference are being held with the full spectrum of business technologies. CebIT Exhibit 2009

I have visited a lot of booths, although I was not able to count how many there were, just imagine last year's count was more than 700 exhibitors. Thats the reason I was not able to complete the tour in one day.

From hardware to software development, you can surely get a solution to your IT problems.

Exhibitors were not just from Australia but also from other countries like India, US, Japan, China and even Philippines! Worth to mention because it is our kababayan, G2ix a company whose headquarter is in Pasig, Manila. Still wonder why it is considered on of the biggest IT exhibition in the world?

What was good with the exhibit is that you will be able to see the different IT innovations. High end powerful infrastructure both on hardware and software.

Most Popular Programming Language

I am a PHP programmer and the same with other programmers out there and students who are taking computer studies wonder what programming language is the most popular one.

According to the Tiobe Programming Community Index, Java is still the leading programming language being used followed by C. PHP falls to 4th place.

The programming community index also shows that PHP is on the rise while Java and C is falling down. Does it mean there will come a time that PHP will be the number one? I guess so.

With a lot of businesses that need their own website these days, most "newcomer" programmers tend to use PHP because it is very easy to adopt and it is open source.

What is the use of this statistics? Well, for those who wants to know which programming language they want to pursue, this study is for you. Specially to the students who wants to be secured in finding a job after they graduate.

It is very frustrating to study a language only to find out after you have the skills nobody will hire you. Although it will take time to study, each one of us will just cross or fingers for the future to come.

To find out more about that statistics, visit http://www.tiobe.com/index.php/content/paperinfo/tpci/index.html

Windows 7 up next

Windows has a new operating system called Windows 7 soon to be released 4th quarter of 2009 or first quarter of 2010. Whichever will be the date, we know that the pirated one will be out earlier than the original :D

Although it has been posted at http://windows7news.com/2009/04/28/leaked-windows-7-rc-build-7100-may-contain-a-trojan/ that the leaked (see! there is already a leak!) OS has a trojan in it so be careful.

I was wondering at first why they call it Windows 7, then I got it from wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7 that this OS has been developed since 2007 hence the name.

I still do not know how good it is. They said that it will be much better compared to Vista (which I am using now).

There is a web page dedicated for this product. See it here http://windows7news.com/

I hope I could get a trial copy and see how good it really is.

Programming Constructs

  • Programming is like sex: one mistake and you have to support it for the rest of your life.
  • Real programmers are those that can sleep in front of terminals [...] with their eyes open.
  • Real programmers don't work from 9 to 5. If any real programmers are around at 9am it's because they were up all night.
  • There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies. The first method is far more difficult.
  • A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked.
  • A crash is when your competitor's program dies. When your program dies, it is an 'idiosyncrasy'. Frequently, crashes are followed with a message like 'ID 02'. 'ID' is an abbreviation for idiosyncrasy and the number that follows indicates how many more months of testing the product should have had.
  • There are two ways to write error-free programs. Only the third one works.
  • As a rule, software systems do not work well until they have been used, and have failed repeatedly, in real applications.
  • Real programmers don't comment their code. If it was hard to write, it should be hard to understand.
  • Beware of programmers who carry screwdrivers.

Advancements in Social Networking Software – What to Expect ahead of 2009

by: Mike Street

Checking the iSight device of MacBook

For anybody who has a MacBook and will encounter a camera problem, this blog is for you.

Early today I tried fixing a MacBook because the camera is not detected. Fixing it was a breeze. But first what I did was run all the applications that is using the camera. Why? because at this point we need to know if it is a device-side error or an application-side error. It turned out that all applications using the camera cannot detect it.

So next thing is to look at the system profiler. It is like the device manager thing in Windows. System Profiler does not register iSight (camera) in there.

What I did? Shutdown the notebook, take the battery out and press the power button for a couple of seconds, say 7 seconds.

Replace the battery and turn on the notebook and the camera is up and running! Sweet!

If your camera on Mac has that problem, try following what I did.

  1. Open the Network Connections item in Control Panel.

  2. Choose the 'Create a new connection' item from the left-hand side of the window. The New Connection Wizard will appear on the screen.

Making the Transition From Offline to Online Tutoring

by: Heather Eagar

For many years, students had to rely on face-to-face individual or group tutoring in order to receive academic assistance outside of the classroom. But tutoring has changed as technological advancements – namely, the Internet – have come about.

Where once before, the only option was to invite a stranger in the home – or meet outside of the home – to receive assistance, now it can be done online. However, if you’re accustomed to this form of tutoring, you may be a bit hesitant about making the switch. If this is the case, here are a few benefits to making the transition from offline to online tutoring.

Still Working with Live People

One cause for hesitation with online tutoring is the fact that you no longer get the face-to-face, live interaction. While it’s very true that you don’t have access to body language and facial expressions, you do have access to a live person in many instances. There are a number of great resources available that make sure to have a qualified tutor ready to chat with students so that they feel that same sense of companionship and camaraderie that they’re used to when working with a person in the same room.

Added Convenience

One reason that many students jump at the chance to work with an online tutor versus taking on the face-to-face tutoring session is the convenience that online tutoring can provide. Think about it; in the past, you had to coordinate schedules with a tutor, find a place to meet, make sure you had all of your materials, and actually arrive on time. However, with an online tutor, so much of this hassle is reduced or eliminated entirely.

For instance, whereas you had to coordinate schedules offline, in an online environment, you normally will be assigned a time by the tutor to meet that you agree upon without much hassle. This of course is coupled with the fact that meeting times are not as difficult to schedule when you can physically meet anywhere as long as a computer is in tow. You can sit in your house, visit your favorite cafĂ©, or park yourself on the beach – whatever you’d prefer. Your only job is to make sure you meet online at the time designated and you’re ready to go. This is definitely a convenience you don’t get with the face-to-face tutor.

Cheaper Rates

Another great benefit to taking on online tutoring is the cheaper rates. If you’re working with a private tutor or learning center, you may find yourself paying anywhere from $30 to $50 an hour. However, if you work with a company that offers tutors online, very often, you can make a monthly payment that equates to the above hourly rates – or you may be able to pay one fee for the year that then allows you 24-hour access to tutoring assistance. How great is that?

Because there are so many great resources to take advantage of online, it’s good to jump on the bandwagon to take advantage of this new tutoring venture. You never know; you may learn that you benefit more from it than offline tutoring.

Microsoft ordered to pay Uniloc over $500 million in anti-piracy patent case

SOFTWARE giant Microsoft has been ordered to pay $US388 million ($547.9 million) for infringing an anti-piracy software patent.

After a long-running legal battle, a US grand jury said Microsoft - a company known for its tough stance on piracy - had "wilfully infringed" the patent.

Both Windows and Office use a "product activation" system that was allegedly taken from Uniloc, a company that makes anti-piracy tools for video games and other software.

This system requires user registration to prevent the same copy of software being installed on several computers.

Uniloc started the legal battle against Microsoft in 2003, 11 years after it patented a similar technology.

Microsoft says it will appeal the US grand jury's decision.

"We are very disappointed in the jury verdict," said David Bowermaster, a Microsoft spokesman.

"We believe that we do not infringe, that the patent is invalid and that this award of damages is legally and factually unsupported," he said. "We will ask the court to overturn the verdict."

Make Money Online by Writing Articles

By: Matt Helphrey

The internet is now becoming a very popular method to earn a decent income. People all over the world are using the internet to sell information products and make a lot of money doing so. All they have to do once their product is created is to promote it and gain traffic.

You will have to learn how to market your website effectively to drive traffic to your website. The smartest thing to do would be to attract visitors who are looking to buy the product you are selling.

Bringing in massive amounts of laser targeted traffic is the key to running a successful internet business. If you do not learn how to promote your online business, you will not have a business in the near future. There are many different ways to do this that cost little or no money.

Some people believe that marketing online is fairly simple, and it is for the most part. What I suggest is to find one method of marketing that you are very good at and to use that method over and over again. You can always learn how to promote your online business other ways some other time. But if what you are doing is working, stick with it!

Article marketing may be the very best way to market your online business. There are many article directories online that you can submit your articles to for free. Most of these article directories allow you to leave a link back to your website in the authors resource box. Your website will move up in rankings in the search engines as you pick up more and more back links.

With article marketing you will get traffic two fold, through the articles themselves and through the search engines. The key to making your article marketing campaign work is consistency. Don't over do it and don't under do it. Some people submit 2 articles a week and some submit up to a handful or more per day. It comes down to the number of competitors in your specific niche.

Instead of submitting one article to every article directory, submit a unique article to each. Submit the bulk of your articles to the top directories and submit to them often.

You may want to consider using an article distribution service as well. These services usually require a monthly fee but is well worth the cost if you can afford it. I personally use an article distribution service and I submit articles manually. I find that a comprehensive approach to distributing the articles works best.

After a few months of writing and submitting articles you will then see the targeted traffic begin to show. Keep up the article marketing and you will soon see the sales along with the traffic.

Advantages of a Custom Website versus using a Website Builder Tool

by: Rodney Ringler

The internet has revolutionized business all around the globe. Almost every competent new or existing business wishes to exploit the incredible potential of the internet, and the first step is to have a web site designed done and maintained by a professional web site design service or build and maintain it yourself. One of the first things to consider is your computer ability. If you despise computers and software and find them confusing and frustrating then building your own website can be quite a task. One that you may not want to undertake. However, if you enjoy working with computers and learning new things or if you just have the patience to stick with it, then building a website is within your grasp. You may also decide to do it yourself to save cost. If you still feel that you want to build your own site you should choose software that is easy to use and user friendly.

Your website should be as unique as you and your business. You should select the website that is specialized in what will meet all your needs, both now and in the future. Custom based websites are for those who already have a website but are looking for those special finishing touches that quality custom graphics can provide. Designer graphics can make your website stand out above the rest and a custom website specializes in taking your original graphic or photo and turning it into a unique work of art. Quality graphics make an incredible difference in the visual appeal of your website.

Actual site "content" continues to be essential to the success of a website. More often than not though, visual appeal is the determining factor as to whether or not a client or customer will remain on a website long enough, to actually see the product or service the business is providing. Custom websites are for those who don’t have the time to design or create, but want to get things mush better and fast with a nice graphics.

Web site builders are online tools which anyone can use to build a professional looking Web site without programming and have it hosted instantly. No software to buy, no code to learn, all you need is to be a little Internet savvy and know how to click your mouse.

Most business owners today know that having a web site is an essential component of marketing. In the past, the choices were to hire a professional web designer, hire a local teenager to create a site for mall money, or learn to do it yourself. The last two options, are the least expensive, and were the preferred method for small businesses. The results are often not what businesses need to grow, reach, and impress new potential customers, however. They seem good at the start but quickly become limiting.

If you operate or manage a business, you surely must realize the increase in e-commerce taking place today. Many businesses find themselves searching for the best way to increase their exposure on the internet, and for most a website is the first course of action. As most businesses operate on firm budgets, finding cost effective solutions are usually one of the first thoughts when looking to make new purchases. When it comes to creating a website there are many affordable software programs that can produce professional results. Business software should be capable of handling your needs today and in the future. Business are always changing, adding new products, changing or removing old products, offering specials, having sales, etc. By choosing a business website builder over a professional web designer you will be able to make changes to your website whenever you want to. Another benefit is that you will be avoiding the high costs associated with developing the website and costs for making any necessary changes.

Website Builder tools advantages to you are increased revenue, cost control, caters to the large demand existing for web designing in the SME sector and can increase the client base without adding to your overhead. The advantage that your customers gets is a professional quality website, up and running in minutes and a User friendly and easily customizable interfaces that gives a complete website with all its frills and features and a nice attractive design. The downside is that you are limited to the look and functions of the tool and the templates or designs they provide.

On of the advantage of a custom website design is that the web site will look and function exactly as you want. A custom made web site can promote your brand and increase sales. The functionality and design of your website is important, because the images and text on the screen can make an indifferent visitor turn into a keen client, and the goal is to optimize your site to evolve maximum traffic conversion.

As more and more people are starting their own small home business many are finding that having a website is an important factor to consider. When one starts to consider building a website, especially the novice, many questions arise including…. can I create a website myself or should I hire a professional?

Hiring a professional is a great way to go if you can afford it. Although there are several things to keep in mind: how much will it cost? How much will ongoing maintenance cost? What will changes cost? How long will changes take? etc. As a result, many people opt to build their own website and begin searching for software that can easily help them.

As you start searching for an easy web site builder, there are some factors that you should take into consideration so that your new software will serve you now and the future.

There is quite a variety of easy web site building software and content management(CMS) based websites on the market today. In addition, some of the software available today is very expensive, geared more for the professional web designer, and come with a huge learning curve.

The options for small businesses to get a site developed have changed from the past. There are now sophisticated "site builder" tools available to small business owners, bundled with many web hosting packages. By using templates, and a content management system to manage updates to the site, it became easier to set up and maintain a web site, and many development companies have canned this functionality, for a fee. Hosting providers are increasingly offering tools to automate the web site building process, and with good reason. This new option has many benefits, as long as the business owner recognizes that there are trade offs and limitations to getting a web site this way. Some of the downsides are…the design is limited to their predefined templates. The functionality is limited to the tool. Also, in most website builder tools it is hard to perform search engine optimization, which is essential for a site to be found in the major search engines.

One of the biggest attractions for site building tools is the cost. It won't necessarily cost less to get your site this way, but it does provide a way to spread the cost over time. The cost for a custom website varies as per the feature and function it carries with itself.

Many people are concerned with building their own website, fearing boring designs and complexity. However, it is now becoming apparent that there are many custom web site builder software products on the market that promise dynamic layouts, professional templates, and user friendly web design tools. The professional web designers know there are a few more things to know, but sometimes they find some irony in the fact that web developers, in their quest to improve and better the web, have made themselves "optional". Most site building tools today are very robust, making it simple to add forms, searching, maps, guest books, calendars, and a whole variety of elements to a web site. Even better, the hosting company sometimes offers an entire suite of services - the site builder, email marketing, search engine optimization and statistics, all in one package along with the hosting.

There is also a possibility that the service will require you to keep some branding on the site telling people that you used their website designs and tools. This is more common with the free site builders - which pay for themselves by putting ads on your site. If your goal is to build a business web site, it's really not worth sacrificing your professional image by getting something free, which screams CHEAP.

Low quality websites sometimes attempt to sell expensive products or services. These websites cannot succeed. Studies reveals people spend more time on a well designed web page than on a low quality web page. There is a comparative relationship between the amount of time that an average visitor will spend on a web page and the amount of time that was spent building the web page.

Websites are an important aspect of online businesses. They are the first face of interaction between the user and the business. The website creates the first impression on the user and hence needs to be effective and impressive too. It is the job of web design services to make the website user friendly and search engine friendly too, so that it can serve the purpose of both effectively.

A tool can make things happen - but if you don't know what to make happen, it is either a useless tool or a dangerous one. There is a learning curve in knowing how to present information online (called information architecture in the profession), as well as for using the site builder. In other word, the fuller featured the tool; the more there is to learn. If you aren't familiar with color theory, use of typography, information architecture, navigation and interface design, and page layout and design, you can potentially make something that will hurt your business more than help it. So, unless you are already computer and web savvy, figuring out all the features within your web hosting and site builder package can be time consuming and frustrating.

In the end there are ways that a business can take advantage of these new options and still create a functional and professional web site. One way is simply take your time and research the available website templates, and find the one that has the most features and flexibility, that meet your functional requirements. In other words, spend the time to learn the things a seasoned pro would bring to the table. The internet is a massive library of "how to" information, where you can literally teach yourself anything - and with enough time spent, you could potentially learn how to layout information, what colors and fonts work well together, how to conduct your marketing online and optimize the site for search engines. The second is choosing the best suitable custom website design company and work with them to build a professional website that meets your needs get your imaginations carried and make business a greta success.

Computer Repair - Is It Hardware, Software Or Both?

Computer repairs can involve hardware repair, software repair, a combination of both, and or probably some troubleshooting. It\'s not for the faint of heart; if you are pulling your hair out, you may want to consider doing something else about it like, call the Geek Squad. Basically what we are attempting to get our machine to load properly. When a PC starts up, first it tests all the connected hardware and then looks for the software that it needs to load in order to run properly. If the machine does not power up, or the machine powers up, but does not load, then we have a pretty good idea as to what the problem may be.

All of the parts of your computer that you can physically see and touch it is your hardware. It takes quite a bit of well engineering and design for all those components must work together well. Sometimes components can be damaged by external forces. To clarify external forces can mean a few things. Shock damage or the effect of being dropped can certainly cause damage to a component therefore rendering it inoperative. Also I would like to include a power surge, over voltage, over temperature, under temperature, water emersion, excessive moisture, acts of nature, etc external forces which can cause failure of a component.

Any code that the machine deals with in the form of data is the software. The operating system, the software, drivers, and all digital, is the code. Although code can be damaged by the result of external forces on a storage device, computer software code is susceptible to a whole different variety of potential means of damage. For instance if you install the wrong driver for the wrong component, the machine will not be able to communicate with the device correctly or at all. If in the case that the machine caught some type of virus, which damaged the code, or worse, compromised code that causes the hardware to have problems, It would be a great Idea to replace damaged code with correct code. Healthy software is crucial to the successful operation of a computer. Just to illustrate this fact, Let\'s format the hard drive and see what the computer does next.

The thing that you have to consider in computer repair is that if there is a change to some of the hardware, you are going to find that you will probably have to make some changes to the software which you have on it in order for it to work correctly. Type of changes that typically need to be made are installs and reinstalls. If there is some troubleshooting involved, I would start from the hardware and work through the software issues. When we start an IBM compatible machine, the unit does its POST. A POST is a Power On Self Test. The machine does this to check if all the components that are connected to the motherboard are functioning. If the machine fails this test, right off the bat you know you have a hardware problem. If this occurs, the machine usually beeps a couple of times and displays nothing on the screen.

Given that the machine successfully passes its POST, and it goes on to seek boot information from the hard drive, you are one step closer to a functioning machine. If in the case that the machine does not boot its operating system, there are a few questions that must be answered. Is there currently an operating system installed? Is the correct boot device called for in the BIOS screen? If you do have your operating system installed and it\'s not loading, Is your BIOS calling for the correct device to load the operating system software? Is there boot information on the drive? If there is no operating system, or if the operating system is not correctly installed, then you may want to consider possibly formatting the hard drive, doing a fresh clean install of the operating system and then trying again.

In order for a PC to load correctly, a few things must happen. First the computer must recognize all of the connected components. All the connected components must be compatible with the motherboard. When the computer does it\'s POST and passes to the next step, this signifies that all the components connected to the machine are compatible and in working condition for the most part. Secondly, the computer must have an operating system with all necessary drivers for all the components to be able to function at maximum potential capacity. When getting into a computer repair project, the main things to consider are, is this a hardware repair, software repair, or both.
